Some parents may go through the trouble of buying organic baby clothes to put on their tiny tot, but what about what goes in their little belly? Will they do as much research into their little boy’s or girl’s diet as they did into finding out name meanings before he or she was born?
For an infant, it cannot be overstated that breastmilk is the absolute best form of nutrition for the first two years of life. It will provide all the protein, fat, immune boost and other growth factors that a little one needs. However, once a baby is weaned, it’s up to the parents to choose what diet they should eat. People have a lot of different diets in this country, but the traditional American diet consists largely of animal based foods.
Unfortunately, there have been a few vegan and vegetarian parents that ignorantly fed their babies a poorly selected vegan diet, and of course the babies either got sick or died of starvation. Some call it death by veganism, but I call it death by irresponsible parenting. In all of those cases, simply adding food sources with the necessary protein, fatty acids and other vitamins and minerals would have saved the childrens’ lives.
There are strong opinions from experts on both sides of this discussion. The best advice I can give to parents is to thouroughly research both arguments. Don’t read any one opinion and run with it. Find out for yourself the effects of a plant-based diet versus an animal-based one for infants, toddlers, children and adults. Whether you decide to feed your baby meat or not, let it be a decision that you come to on your own.
