Baby Videos: Helpful or harmful to baby’s development?

Many parents have bought their babies a “baby einstein” video or “brainy baby” video under the pretense that it would help the child’s development in some way. A recent study done by Frederick Zimmerman published in the Journal of Pediatrics shows that infants from the age of 8 to 16 months that regularly watched baby videos understood an average of 6 to 8 words less than babies that did not watch any videos.

However, for toddlers from 17 to 24 months, the DVD’s had neither a positive or negative effect. The researchers stressed that there’s no need to panic; babies are quite resilient and will still develop normally, but that parents should not purchase these tapes thinking that it will get their kids into Harvard.

Unique baby gifts useful for learning are the classic toys like blocks or toy keys. Toddlers learn by touching and feeling, so hands on learning is essential. After going through all the trouble of picking a baby boy name or baby girl name that will evoke intelligence and strength in your offspring, you don’t want to do anything that could harm their chances at normal development.
