No, that’s not a typo. Some parents from China are trying to forgo traditional baby boy names and name their child ”@”, which they say means “love him”. Of course, everyone recognizes that as the email symbol for “at”, and that includes all the email users in China. At a press conference the deputy chief of the State Language Commission for China, Li Yuming, said that the fathers argument is that when the word “at” is sounded out by many Mandarin speakers, it sounds like “ai ta” which means ”love him” in the Mandarin language. Li did not say if the government will accept the unusual name, but it has been stricter with chinese baby names since last year when a ban was announced on baby names with Arabic numerals, foreign language basis, or symbols that do not belong to a Chinese minority language.
