Interracial Pregnancy

Summary:As the number of interracial couples continues to rise, the number of interracial pregnancies goes up too, and there are many questions that people have. First, it should be known that there are no differences between pregnancies of an interracial couple and a couple of the same race. Human women from all colors and cultures have the same kind of experiences during pregnancy and labor and delivery.

There are some interesting things to note about the genetics of a racially mixed baby. First of all, let’s establish that every human being on the planet today can be genetically traced back to one man and one woman. Scientists have dubbed them “Y chromosome Adam and mitochondrial Eve” in reference to the male Y chromosome and the mitochondrial DNA that women pass to their offspring. The Bible simply calls them Adam and Eve. As humanity grew, it eventually divided into groups and dispersed over the globe. The different groups developed into the different shades of skin tone that we see today. Therefore, white people are more closely related to each other than they are to people of other colors and so on and so forth with every other race.

From a genetic point of view, the less you are related to someone, the less likely your offspring will suffer from genetic diseases and the more genetically versatile the offspring will be. Here’s an example of what I’m saying: among white people, there is a higher percentage of the genetic disorder cystic fibrosis, a disease that affects the lungs. Among African Americans there is a higher percentage sickle cell anemia, a genetic blood disease.

The list goes on and on with other closely related groups of people. So, if a child is racially mixed, they will have a much lower chance of developing any of these genetic disorders. This is because many of these diseases are caused by what’s called ‘recessive’ genes. For example, if a white person inherited the gene for cystic fibrosis from one parent but got a healthy gene from the other parent, they will not develop the disease. They will instead be a carrier and possibly pass it on to their children. A child would have to inherit two recessive cystic fibrosis genes, one from each parent, in order to be born with the disease. Because this happens mostly within ethnicities, a mixed child has an advantage.

However, it’s still important to know your genetic history. Humans in general today are much more mixed and varied that our ancestors because we’re not as isolated into groups as they were. It’s still possible, in other words, for a black and white mixed baby to have either cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anemia. It’s just not as likely. Overall, though, it’s important to know that racially mixed children in general turn out just as healthy and beautiful as any other baby.
